Devon is currently enjoying an explosion of young jazz talent and Teignmouth Jazz and Blues is delighted to welcome to the Bronx Bar, Teignmouth, yet another new artiste in the shape of saxophonist Jade Gall who is launching her first album Out with the Blues with her talented group whose ensemble playing shows great energy, drive and swing but are also capable of producing delicacy and thoughtfulness.
Jade who learned her art at The Royal School of Music and Art is a regular performer in the south west including Glastonbury. Her tenor sax playing has been described as “a big, strong tenor sound with a beautiful sense of melody and swing”. Perhaps due to her roots as a flautist she is also able to produce light, delicate playing when required.
As one might expect her gig will have a good deal of balance revisiting standards such as jazz waltz reworking of ‘I can’t get started’ to classics such as ‘Midnight voyage’. While her light touch comes through on ‘Everything happens to me’ and the Bossa take on ‘Beautiful Love’
The quintet is wonderfully talented group of local but nationally recognised players. Propelled by the solid, driving bass playing of Kevin Sanders and the exciting drumming of Coach York. The combination of the fabulous Neil Burns on guitar and melodic Matthew Tredget–Johns on piano provide a beautiful array of harmonic textures that fully complement Jade’s up front playing.
Jazz is sometimes thought to be a bit of an old boys club. Nothing could be further from the truth with this gig and you can expect to hear an exciting innovative sound which resonates with youthful energy. You will hear a lot more of Jade in the future so why not take the opportunity to hear her now and be able to say in the future ‘I first saw her at Teignmouth before she came famous’!
