Junkyard Angels

Date: 18/10/2018

Like many top bands from before the millennium there is a trend to reform or return to  a golden age of their music and so Teignmouth  Jazz and Blues is proud to feature one of the UK’s top blues bands, The Junkyard Angels, who are on tour revisiting their seminal album of 1994  ‘Lonesome La La’ with singer Jeff ‘the Horse’ Horsey.  The ‘Angels’ have appeared many times on the Paul Jones radio show, played on two W.C. HANDY Award winning albums – the blues equivalent of the Oscars – toured with countless American bluesmen including Phil Guy, Carey Bell and Lazy Lester, and shared stages with Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. Like all the best bands they parted company a few years later after the recording, but it’s songs from this session that will form the bedrock of their show at the Bronx Bar, and for the band to enjoy a long overdue reunion.

The acclaimed guitarist Julian Piper is again at the helm. Julian has also been seen treading stages at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero club in Clarksdale Mississippi, and Chicago’s Rosa’s.  Fans of Julian will have a double treat as he will also be appearing on the 16th November at the Jazz and Blues Festival in Teignmouth when  he teams up with award winning pianist Craig Milverton.

Jeff ‘the Horse’ Horsey  gets back in the band with mind blowing harmonica and vocals while Kevin Dance sets the groove on bass.

Teignmouth Jazz and Blues is committed to raising the female profile of artistes and so it’s a particular pleasure to welcome, on drums, a new member of the band, Lucy Piper.  A precocious talent who following a visit when eight years old to the grave of Robert Johnson, found the Blues infusing itself in her. In recent years when playing in Clarksdale with Julian she became popular with the blues musicians there and ended up playing for several  months with top bands especially with Bill and Shy Parry.  So watch out then for the punch behind the band with a kick like a lady.
