Rising young jazz stars tour Teignmouth ..top class septet with award winning Trumpeter Alex Ridout
Many local music fans will know of Matt as a precocious keyboard talent from Exeter who was playing for the region’s top bands at the age of fifteen. He has now spread his wings where a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music took him to London where his talents were quickly recognised. Matt cuts across the range and has worked with stars such as Joss Stone and Chris Potter among other big names. https://mattcartermusic.co.uk/
Variety will be on the bill at this gig as the band focuses on arrangements of classic swinging American Songbook songs, arranged by Matt for the band. They also play original compositions, some of which are more groove based, taking influences from genres such as gospel and funk.
It is worth mentioning the rest of the band as they are all young stars in their own right. In 2018 Alex Ridout on trumpet won the Rising Star category in the British Jazz awards having already won the BBC’s Young Jazz Musician of the year.
The septet, which formed when members met at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall, allows a full range of sound with Harry Maund (trombone), Jonny Ford ((alto sax) and soulster, Harry Greene (tenor sax). While Luca Caruso and Joe Lee lay down the groove on drums and bass. Check out the web sites and hear the superb music they play.
This is a band with something for everyone. For young musicians and music lovers these guys are an inspiration ( note the reduced £5 entry); while older fans will enjoy the quality of this music and its vibrant energy. With the holiday season in full swing Teign Jazz and Blues especially welcomes visitors to Teignmouth who will be delighted that Teignmouth can offer music of the calibre found in top venues such as Pizza Express Soho. The event will also give the audience to sample the skills of several members who will be playing this year’s 30th Jazz and Blues Festival on the weekend of 18h October.
