Neil Burns Trio with the Haggis Horns horn section!

Date: 06/07/2023

This very special extra gig has been squeezed in and made possible by our connections to some of the other South West jazz venues.

The Haggis Horns began as a horn section before morphing into a full, very funky and very successful band.
They still go out as a horn section and are much in demand in both live and recorded settings, with credits on the records of Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and many other household names, and plaudits from serious artists from across the industry.

And they’re coming to Teignmouth!

Neil Burns is a highly respected and seasoned jazz guitarist and has honed his organ trio sound over years at hundreds of gigs. It’s a format that lends itself well to swinging hard bop, boogaloo, blues and funk and for this mini tour the band will be focussing on the groovier end of this music but very much in the jazz tradition.

Neil has collaborated with artists including Jim Mullen, Roger Beaujolais, Steve Waterman, Terry Quinney, Craig Milverton and Martin Dale. Neil is much in demand all over the Southwest but he last played for us in 2020 (!) and it’s great to welcome him back to the club. He’s joined by monster rhythm section Martin Jenkins (Hammon organ) and Gary Evans (drums).

If you need it, more from the Haggis Horns’ biography:

The ‘Horns were part of Mark Ronson’s ’Version Players’ playing round the world including a Jay-Z support tour.

As part of Martha Reeves & the Vandellas they have played round Europe including supporting Brian Wilson and Ocean Colour Scene.

BBC6 listeners voted them as the horn section for ‘Craig Charles presents The Fantasy Funk Band’. They have been included on Compilations by Mr Scruff, The Nextmen & Crazy P.

The Haggis Horns have released five albums on Haggis Records and have plans for live and remix albums soon.

“The best ******* horn section in the world!” (expletive deleted!)
Mark Ronson

“The Haggis horns are my go-to brass section.”
Dimitri From Paris

“I love the Haggis Horns. No-one plays funk the way that they do”
Craig Charles

“A legendary horn section.”
Stuart Zender

“Rough and tough, always. Precise, powerful, musical and always pulling something extra out of the box. Is it any surprise to see the huge list of major artists that they have played for, alongside their career as artists in their own right?”
Mark “Snowboy” Cotgrove

"I loved working with the profound Haggis Horns.”
Martha Reeves
