“One of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed young bands on the UK scene” London Jazz News
Take a trombone, violin, vocals and a red hot rhythm section and what have you got? Certainly not a Dixieland band but a chance to hear the shape of jazz to come with Bonsai, a band that would not be out of place at Glastonbury or Ronnie Scotts.
British jazz is booming at the moment and leading the wave are young performers of outstanding talent with a new take on jazz which appeals to a growing audience of young fans as well as the more established jazz fraternity.
Multi Award winning trombonist Rory Ingham has put together an entirely new sound in the shape of his band Bonsai (formerly The Jam Experiment) http://bonsaibanduk.com/home-2#homepage which is playing its only South West gig at the Bronx Bar Teignmouth on Wednesday24th July.
The band is attracting rave reviews for the jazz critics and BBC R3 has recently recorded its entire opening gig at London’s famous Pizza Express Club. Not bad when you are still in your early twenties!
Their immediate success is quite understandable with Rory and his brother Dominic on violin and vocals presenting a unique sound met by a ferociously high- octane rhythm section, of Jonny Mansfield on drums, Toby Comeau on keyboards and Joe lee on bass. the ensemble has an electric synergy that results in “pure musical gold”. Their music is highly original and ranges from high power grooves to more lyrical moods It has a strong fusion base especially as Dominic’s vocals give a definite prog rock feel at times with tones of Robert Wyatt.
Teign Jazz and Blues is getting a reputation for being a ‘you heard them here first’ type of club and Bonsai are at the top of this trend. So save yourself the time and money in going to Ronnie Scotts, The Kings Place and the Royal Albert Hall ( all destinations in their tour) and instead tell your friends and make this an evening of good music and memories of a great gig.
