Welcome to Teignmouth Jazz and Blues 

Once again Teignmouth Jazz and Blues Festival, now in its 29^th year, bring a heady, eclectic mix that will delight jazz and blues fans alike.  Newcomers will be delighted to discover that there are over thirty main acts, as well as free fringe events in pubs and cafes throughout the centre of this delightful seaside resort.  As usual, the festival divides itself between National and International artists, whilst showcasing some of the South West’s finest musicians.

The festival has always been a front runner in looking for and promoting new talent and this year is no exception.  It is fantastic that we are seeing a flourish of incredibly talented young musicians, including highly talented young female stars, which is attractive to a younger audience.  Don’t miss; Alexandra Ridout Quintet, Leo Richardson Quartet, Tori Freestone and Alycona Mick.  Heading west, we have the wildly inventive London based PYJAEN and MILON from Bristol, blending their ethnic influences.

South West young stars, Jade Gall, Sam Massey and Matt Carter all bring their own exciting take on the art, while the Alex Lloyd Band brings a timely injection of funk into the mix.  All of them at the launch pad, you saw them before they were famous!

There are themed gigs, which audiences find entertaining and are often a welcome break from the great American Song Book.  The ever inventive Neil Maya Quartet brings a tribute to 1959, The Golden Year of Jazz.  Tom Unwin returns with his ever popular ‘Blow Up’, a revisiting of film music of the ‘60s and ‘70s.  The Al Swainger Quartet turn their attention to Chick Corea and Return to Forever.  Yvonne Hellin’s R.A.Y. returns with a reworking of classic pop tunes with a focus on female writers and singers such as Carol King, Etta James, and Joni Mitchell.   Likewise the ever popular (with very good reason), Annika Skoogh sings  Bossa, as well as her take on standards.

The festival once more also welcomes long established musicians.  The astounding Gilad Atzmon makes a very welcome return, as does the American bebop virtuoso Greg Abate, who is teaming up with pianist Matt Carter.  On the subject of bebop, Martin Dale brings both sensitivity and attack to the Tenor Sax.  The Nigel Price Quartet and Dave Stephens put the jazz guitar in their very capable hands, while the Andrea Vicari Trio brings a delightfully light touch to the piano.

Teignmouth is always diverse and continues to be.  Ever popular, Gypsy jazz has a real outing this year in the form of three excellent bands:- La Vie en Rose, The Schmoozenbergs and sneaking under the radar, is the improbably named Gustav Bensel Hot Club, which is a gypsy and klezmer trio led by saxophonist Andy Williamson.

For the more traditionally minded, veteran John Shillito’s Riviera Ramblers present another themed gig when they focus on the music of the great Henry ‘Red’ Allen with their performance ‘Ride Red, Ride! Remembering Red Allen’.  Big bands, due to their expense are fading into memory, so the festival is extremely proud to promote the Dave Hankin Big Band.  Dave will be headlining Sunday night’s finale and celebrating the golden age of swing. Blues has proved highly successful in our festival so this year we’ve pushed the boat out. Heading the bill is one of the best Blues singers in the UK, the incredible Kyla Brox, who will be making her debut in Devon.  The veteran and ever wild guitarist Innes Sibun and his band also debuts on his return to the blues stage after many years of touring with stars like Robert Plant.  Returning by popular demand are the Adam Sweet Band and Sons of the Delta.  Finally, internationally acclaimed guitarist Julian Piper joins up with renowned jazz pianist Craig Milverton who proves he is equally adept on the blues piano.

 On the subject of the Blues the festival is introducing to its family of ‘Stroller Tickets’ a Blues Stroller that gives access to all blues gigs.  While strollers for the entire weekend or single days offer best value the festival is only too aware that many people will want to see single acts and so ‘on the door’ tickets are available in advance.  For full details of the acts or booking see www.teignmouthjazz.org
