Many of us have a lasting affection for the film classics of the 60s and 70s such as Alfie, Blow Up and Get Carter to name but a few. Part of their lasting cult status is that their sound tracks were often cutting edge jazz for the time composed by world class Jazz and film score composers of the likes of Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock and John Barry. This month’s gig at the Bronx Bar, Teignmouth sees Tom Unwin’s (a film score composer in his own right) superb quartet, The Blow Up take up on this era and extend it into a the modern age with music that can only be described as the very best in contemporary jazz which is both challenging yet retains a strong melodic core fuelled by a passion throughout the entire band.

This is only to be expected with the calibre of musicianship. Tom (http://www.tomunwin.co.uk/the-blow-up/) has arranged all the material and leads on keyboards alternating between piano and Hammond.  At the core of the Band are the light touch talents of the fabulous Ric Byer on drums.  While the multi- talented bassist Marcus Vergette sets the pace.  Stig Olsen further excites the audience on saxes and bass clarinet with wild solos that get the audience on their feet. You may have heard them before, in which case, you will be dying for more. If a newcomer to their score then you surely have a treat in store.

There is also an added attraction in the Bronx Bar has a feature of silently playing old films against its walls.  So for the Blow Up this will be a multimedia ‘Happening’ reminiscent of the 60s where music and film come together.
