Steve Waterman Quintet feat. Terry Quinney & The Neil Burns Trio

Date: 30/11/2023

Two award winning horn players Steve Waterman (trumpet) and Terry Quinney (tenor sax) front this quintet backed up by club favourite Neil Burn's organ trio (Martin Jenkins – organ; Ric Byer – drums) who played to a sell out crowd earlier in the year with part of the Haggis Horns section.

Guitarist Neil Burns's organ trio is highly regarded in the South West and is deservedly busy around all the jazz clubs. Neil's group attracts big name players from further afield to play with them, and has toured with this quintet several times.

Terry Quinney hails from Canada where he received his jazz training and many awards, tours and festival dates, before settling in Somerset. As well as his own quartets and regular projects with Neil Burns, Terry founded the popular "Sound of Blue Note" project based in Bristol – which should give you some idea of the sound and pedigree of his playing, which we last enjoyed at the club in 2020.

Steve Waterman is one of the top British jazz trumpet players both at home and on the international scene. He began his career while studying at Trinity College Of Music, and since then has worked regularly on the British, European and International jazz scene.Steve has recorded many critically acclaimed CDs under his own name and has toured Europe playing at many of the major Jazz Festivals. With the Carla Bley Big Band he recorded two CDs for the ECM label. Other performers that Steve has regularly worked and recorded with include: ANDY SHEPPARD, TONY COE, VICTOR MENDOZA, MAL WALDRON, GRAHAM COLLIER, MIKE GARRICK, DON WELLER, JOHN WARREN, COLIN TOWNS & ROBIN JONES, JEFF HOOPER, ALAN BARNES, and LEE GIBSON. As a composer, Steve has had a number of commissions ranging from a small groups to big bands. These include big band album Pendulum and his Concerto for Congas written for Robin Jones

In December 2002 Steve, along with Baritone Sax player George Haslam, was invited to perform at the Havana Jazz Festival as guests of Chucho Valdes with a Cuban big band – the band, fronted by Bobby Carcassés, featured many of the greatest Cuban jazz musicians, and played 3 concerts in Havana and Santa Clara. The program included Waterman directing his ‘Concerto for Congas’ and works by Cuban Jazz composer Jorge Triana Hdz.

As an educator Steve has co-written with John ONeil a highly acclaimed Jazz Trumpet tutor book -THE JAZZ METHOD FOR TRUMPET. He is a professor of Jazz Trumpet at Trinity College of Music in London and visiting Jazz Trumpet specialist at The Royal Northern College Of Music and The Welsh College Of Music And Drama.

Steve runs his own Annual Contemporary Big Band Jazz Weekend with Alan Barnes, and also teaches on many summer jazz courses, master classes and workshops throughout the UK and in Spain, Finland, Latvia, South Africa, and Cuba.
