This quartet, which pays homage to the music of the great Nat "King" Cole, has made a splash in Torquay, Ashburton and Dartmouth with several repeat bookings in each. We are pleased to present them at Teignmouth for our first gig of the year.
Three musical friends decided to do something different and revive the trio format popularised by Nat Cole, Oscar Peterson and Ray Charles in the 1950s: piano, guitar and bass. On bass is Kev Sanders (known and loved by all Devon jazz fans), guitarist Adrian Balletto (Leeds school of music, Solar, Dave Hankin big band) is coming down from Exeter, and pianist Tom Ball (of the Liquid Spirit trio) completes the rhythm section. Together they've crafted faithful renditions of some of the original trio's early instrumentals, along with updated versions of Cole's later, better-known hits (many involving the pianistic style of George Shearing), which brought him enduring and deserved fame.
Heading the line-up is star vocalist and trumpeter Marvin Muoneké. Nominated in 2024 for the Boisdale Jazz Awards, his deep and silky voice has to be heard to be believed and really does the repertoire justice. Playing 7-8 gigs a week, Marvin has built a fearsome reputation around the South West and is now regularly seen in major jazz venues in London; indeed, he has a tour booked in the States for 2025. He has featured on TV in both The Voice and Britain's got Talent and has released three albums which are available to stream. He regularly tours with the “Down for the Count” jazz orchestra and has twice been invited to perform with the Azerbaijan Philharmonic orchestra. He is a captivating performer, musician and band leader with an assurance that belies his youth, and he has arranged some of the songs into his own original medleys that showcase his off-the-cuff improvisational style.
We are once again enjoying the hospitality of the yacht club, which will be open to members and non members alike.
We look forward to seeing you – this is going to be a cracker!
